That’s the Story of Vox Cantoris

Vox Cantoris

Since its founding in 2000 in the AlpesMaritimes, the ensemble VOX CANTORIS has focused its work on the research and performance of repertoires drawn from largely unexplored musical sources. In collaboration with numerous musicologists, it seeks to develop an anthropological approach to sacred music of the 16th– 18th centuries, and to recover the knowhow of the singers of those periods (direct reading from original notation, singing at the lectern, ornamentation, collection of still-living oral traditions, etc.).

Having chosen La Réole (Gironde) in 2007 as its place of residence and a privileged venue for its creations, the ensemble continues its investigative work while also striving to provide audiences with keys to understanding the purpose of these early repertoires—considering the context in which the music was created, its intended use, the conditions of its performance, the training of church musicians, and so on.

Vox Cantoris has been associated with the FESTIVAL DES RICHES HEURES DE LA RÉOLE since its founding in 2009, presenting each of its new creations there. Its discography includes around twenty recordings, all critically acclaimed (5 Diapasons, Diapason découverte, 2 Clefs de Resmusica, 4 stars from Le Monde de la Musique, 3 nominations at the ICMA…).

Vísperas de Santiago Apóstol en la Nueva España (XVI-XVIII) - versión corta

The Vespers for St. James the Apostle in New Spain are a unique testimony to the musical richness of the Convent of the Incarnation in Mexico. Six polyphony books (16th–18th centuries) have survived and are now preserved at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Thanks to the support of the Festival and DRAC Nouvelle‑Aquitaine, we are able to reveal this remarkable treasure of Mexico’s musical heritage.

This list does not include the Mexican composer Juan de Lienas, whose works appear only in the music books of the convents of Santa Inés and the Incarnation in Mexico.
